The Joseph T. Simpson Public Library Board of Trustees seeks an inspiring and visionary Executive Director to build upon a legacy of excellence and drive the library further toward an exciting future.

Located in the heart of south-central Pennsylvania, and as a member of the federated Cumberland County Library System, this library offers ideal conditions for a community-minded professional. The Simpson Public Library service area contains a unique blend of affordability, natural beauty, and proximity to major cities. The abundance of parks, trails, museums, sports, arts, cultural events and entertainment make it an ideal place to live, work, and lead.

The Executive Director reports to a governing board comprised of 9 to 15 members and leads a talented team of staff comprised of 35 people (20.70 FTE). The operating budget for 2025 is $1,475,054. This position plans, develops, evaluates, and administers library collections, programs, and services to meet the needs of the residents and organizations in Simpson Library’s service area, which consists of Mechanicsburg Borough, Shiremanstown Borough, and the townships of Monroe, Silver Spring, and Upper Allen. Total service area population is 59,915.

The Executive Director oversees development and community relations activities and ensures effective facility maintenance and operations for two properties, as well as effective safety and security practices. Working in conjunction with the board, the Director oversees finance, policy, governance, and strategic planning for the Simpson Public Library.

Qualifications:

Minimum required qualifications for this position include a Master’s degree in Library Science and/or Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years’ increasingly responsible experience as a librarian in a public library setting, including at least three years of supervisory experience preferred, along with previous experience in fundraising. Employment is contingent upon successfully passing the FBI criminal history, Pennsylvania Child Abuse and Pennsylvania State Police Criminal History background clearances.

Compensation: 

The hiring salary range starts at $73,000 (negotiable dependent on experience and qualifications) and includes partial payment of health insurance for the employee and paid life insurance for the employee. Also includes seven paid holidays, vacation and sick leave time. The Executive Director is a full-time exempt position, 37.5 hours per week and includes daytime, evening, and weekend hours as scheduled.
