Longwood Gardens Preconference
Friday, June 27, 2025 (8:30 AM - 4:00 PM) (EDT)
Description
Longwood Gardens is one of the world’s premiere horticultural locations established in 1907 by Pierre S. du Pont. It is one of the crown jewels of the Philadelphia region. A $250 million expansion and renovation were just completed in 2024.
Their special library is not open to the general public, but with special permission will be open to PaLA preconference attendees only! The Longwood Library, even in its old space, was quite impressive. They have a large collection of horticultural materials, and a massive photo library of 100 years of displays and activities. Managing the photo library is fascinating. The library also sponsors an annual Community Read.https://longwoodgardens.org/education/community-read Longwood selects titles related to their mission, and then partners with libraries and other gardens in the area to present programs for the public. They also provide multiple copies of the books to each library.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity! Enjoy the stunning beauty of Longwood Gardens (watch the video) and a rare opportunity to visit the Longwood Library! In 1906, industrialist Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954) purchased a small farm near Kennett Square, PA, to save a collection of historic trees from being sold for lumber. Today, Longwood Gardens is one of the world’s great horticultural displays, welcoming 1.6 million guests annually and encompassing 1,100 acres of dazzling gardens, woodlands, meadows, fountains, a 10,010-pipe Aeolian organ, and grand conservatories. Expanding on its commitment to conservation, in 2024 Longwood Gardens acquired the 505-acre Longwood at Granogue, a cultural landscape in nearby Wilmington, Delaware. Longwood Gardens is the living legacy of Pierre S. du Pont, bringing joy and inspiration to everyone through the beauty of nature, conservation, and learning.
