Reference Librarian

The Easton Area Public Library is seeking a part-time Reference Librarian at our Main library.

The position is eight (8) evening hours/week, plus at least one 8-hour Saturday shift a month starting at $24/hour.                                             

The Reference Librarian reports to the Coordinator of Adult Services, providing a wide range of reference services. The ideal candidate is personable and friendly, enjoys being part of a team, working with the public, and has a passion for public libraries. 

Duties include:

  • Use professional techniques to analyze and answer reference questions, including searching relevant print and electronic resources, contacting outside agencies for information, and referring to other institutions when warranted.
  • Assist patrons in selection of reading material through knowledge of the collection, current literature, and readers’ advisory resources.
  • Assist patrons in the use of the automated catalog and other electronic library resources.
  • Provide basic technical assistance at both the public computers and with patron devices, and conduct one-on-one technology assistance appointments.
  • Participate in developing and running library programs and events for teens and adults.
  • Assume responsibility as Librarian in Charge on evenings and weekends.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science required. Library experience desired.

Skills:

  • Knowledge of the professional methods of library science
  • Knowledge of basic computer functions and programs, including Microsoft Office, and the ability to assist patrons with basic computer and technological functions
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Ability to interpret library resources and services for the general community
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision

Professional Responsibilities:

Professional staff is expected to keep abreast of current trends and techniques in public library service and participate in the activities of professional library organizations.

Must be able to bend, reach, lift, stoop, and push a book truck. Must possess the manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to operate a computer. Must be able to communicate with the public and speak clearly.
