Facilitating Successful Visual Arts Programs for Adults at Your Library

Tisa Ott - Adult Services LibrarianTisa Ott is the Adult Services Librarian at the Penn Hills Library. She is an active programmer who constantly seeks innovative activities to engage the adult audience in her community. Tisa holds a bachelor's degree in Painting and Printmaking from San Diego State University and a Master of Science in Library Science (MSLS) from Clarion University.
Summary
The presenter will discuss visual arts programs for adults offered at Penn Hills Library. She will focus on strategies for facilitating visual arts activities through the lens of three specific programs: “How to Draw” (a step-by-step drawing class), “Art Lab” (an arts and crafts class utilizing various materials and methods), and “Accessible Crafts” (a workshop featuring self-guided projects). During this presentation, Tisa will: • Provide a brief overview of how and why each program was conceived and how they have evolved. • Explain how to research each program using available resources and conduct a demo of one of the projects. • Discuss considerations and procedures for running these projects, including factors such as patron demographics, room setup, and instruction methods. • Share five successful projects from each program, along with supply lists. • Lastly, Tisa will explain how she evaluates each program's success both qualitatively and quantitatively, using program evaluations, participant feedback, and attendance data. This 45-minute lecture will conclude with a 15-minute Q&A session.

Shamichael is the author of Meet Me at the Library, a compelling exploration of how libraries foster civic dialogue, community engagement, and bridge-building in today’s society. The book has garnered widespread acclaim, inspiring conversations on the transformative role of public libraries in democracy. With an MS in Nonprofit Leadership from the University of Pennsylvania, Shamichael has lectured at institutions such as Harvard and Rutgers. A sought-after speaker, he inspires action and catalyzes change through his work, bridging gaps between diverse communities and creating pathways for collective progress.
